Is 2D Animation Going Obsolete Or Is It Still Relevant In Today's Video Marketing Trends?

2D animation, in its entirety, refers to the objects and characters created in a two-dimensional space; it means all they have is a particular width and height to begin with. The dawn of animation took place with 2D, and it happens to be the ultimate pioneer of this technology and various aspects associated with it. Content creators and marketers have been using it for some time now, and the trend doesn't seem to be shifting even so.

But then 3D rolled in, and the use case for 2D decreased significantly, but to state that it is completely dead and is not being used in the market at all is to stretch it a lot. 3D technology is indeed being adopted significantly, and 2D is becoming more and more of a lost cause. However, even in the current video marketing trends, 2D technology finds its use case in multimedia, movies/theatre, and YouTube is the living and breathing example of 2D technology. All videos depicted are 2D and can be accessed by a more comprehensive and global audience. European markets and Japan seems to be inclined with 2D technology even when the development and distribution of the 3D tech has been simplified and made less costly.

Opportunity for diversity

As explained earlier, there is always some opportunity for diversity and this is what is happening right now; even when the use case of the 3D technology is at an all-time high, there is a group of developers out there who are still developing and presenting their work using the 2D tech. It generally means that even if the current use for 2D is limited, people are still using it and making fortunes in the industry because there are still people and fans out there who would like to watch 2D or be approached with it.

At the end of the day, it is not the technology you have used to depict your work but the overall meaning that your content delivers, and this is what matters the most. Even if you are using an expensive 3D technology to build your characters and story around and it does not fit the overall context, it could be a lost cause. But with the 2D technology, this isn't the case; you have to develop a 2-dimensional structure even if you are going to turn it into a 3D model. 2D technology is still being used to fill the holes created within 3D videos and animation production, so whatever mainstream media puts out in the open about 2D tech, beware of it and don't take it for granted.

2D technology is still alive and kicking and will probably be here until more modern architecture doesn't hit the market to support all 3D technology varieties and what it has to offer.

Hire a 2D animation company to develop your own explainer videos in 2D or reaching out to your intended audience as a brand.
